Vaccines

Vaccines are substances pretending to be infections. They train the immune system so that when a real infection comes along, the immune system is primed and ready to respond effectively. In HIV research, vaccines can be therapeutic (i.e. training your immune system to be more effective even if you are already HIV+) and/or preventative (i.e. training your immune system to block HIV infection altogether).
